THE lawmaker who drew flak online after defying a security protocol and confronting a security personnel at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) was rushed to the hospital after suffering chest pains.

ACTS-OFW Party-list Representative Aniceto "John" Bertiz III has been confined in the hospital since Tuesday, October 2, after suffering from chest pains, House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez announced in a press conference on Wednesday, October 3.

Suarez said Bertiz underwent a heart bypass surgery some two years ago and the issues he is facing now might have triggered the chest pains.

Buhay Part-list Rep. Lito Atienza said: “One thing is definite. Congressman Bertiz is suffering from hypertension and high blood pressure.”

Asked if Bertiz will undergo another operation, COOP-NATTCO Rep. Anthony Bravo said the former is still under observation.

Asked if the controversial lawmaker will attend the investigation into the ethics complaint against him, Bravo said: “I don’t know kung papayagan siya ng doktor (I don't know if his doctor would allow it).”

Bertiz was criticized after he refused to remove his shoes during a security check at the NAIA last week.

In the viral CCTV (closed-circuit television) video which recorded Bertiz’s misdemeanor, the latter was also seen snatching the ID of the security personnel who called him out for failing to follow the airport’s security protocol.

Bertiz apologized to the public in a press conference on Monday, October 2, but he was criticized anew after he likened his behavior to a woman having her monthly period.

Prior to the NAIA incident, Bertiz was also the subject of scrutiny after he was caught on video saying in jest that the passers of the agriculture and bio systems engineering examinations will receive their Professional Regulation Commission ID if they do not know Bong Go. That video also went viral. (SunStar Philippines)
