Orcullo delivers big for RP team

HANNOVER -- Former World No.1 Dennis Orcullo lifted the RP team to a 4-1 win over the Czech Republic to cruise into the Last 16 of first-ever World Team Cup Championship at the Hannover Exhibition Grounds in Germany.

Orcullo, one of the top players of star-studded Bugsy Promotions and a former Sun.Star Superbalita 9-Ball champion, defeated Roman Hybler, 8-2, in 9-ball, and Lukas Krenek, 7-2, in 10-ball.

“Maganda ang nilaro ni Dennis against Czech Republic sa 9-ball and 10-ball. Talagang hindi niya binigyan ng pagkakataong makadikit. I hope magtuloy-tuloy ito,” said Bugsy owner Perry Mariano.

The Japan-based Antonio Lining also beat Michal Gavenciak, 8-4, in 9-ball.

In the 8-ball Scotch Doubles, the two countries split the points with the Philippines winning the first match, 6-3, and losing the second, 6-4.

Two-time BSCP National Pool Championships ruler Lee Vann Corteza was playing with Hybler in the 10-ball competition with the match tied at one.

However, with the Filipinos already earning four points, the match was called off.

The tournament, which is the first of its kind, has attracted participants from 48 nations and dangles a $400,000-purse.

Last Monday, the RP team blanked Great Britain II, 4-0, while Czech Republic edged Korea, 4-3.

Also advancing to the Sweet 16 are Poland, Russia, Sweden, Germany, China, Switzerland and the US.
