CJC woodpushers dominate Dacs

COR Jesu College (CJC) of Digos dominated the recently-concluded Davao Association of Catholic Schools (Dacs) 2018 Sportsfest chess competition held at the Dacs Office in Juna Subdivision, Matina, Davao City.

Sixth-seed Mohmin Morsalim of CJC scored perfect six points to clinch the men's chess gold medal over top seed Gino Angelo Asuncion of San Pedro College (SPC) and seventh-seed Dean Jann Piloton of the Ateneo de Davao University (Addu) who made identical five points to take home the silver and bronze, respectively.

Morsalim upset Asuncion in the third round as he also outclassed Bernie Padilla of Philippine Women's College (PWC), Ralph Miguel Reyes and Jeo Jao of Addu, Harizon Maliga of St. Mary's College of Tagum and Dran Pio Eva of St. Peter's College of Toril in the 36-player field.

In the women's event, top seed CJC player Frince Ezra Vanjo Ocliasa tallied 5.5 points to annex the gold in the six-round Swiss System format tournament. Her teammate Queennie Galinada and Holy Cross of Davao College's Jessa Marie Bautista, who both finished with points, ended up with the silver and bronze, respectively.

Galinada edged Bautista via superior tiebreaks.

Ocliasa, meanwhile, drew with Galinada in the penultimate round but eked out wins over SPCT's Ana Rubie Delda, Addu's Bernadette Perez and Kryzafel Kyra Castro, HCDC's Mercy Bautista and SMCT's Bea Phoemella Taray.
