Mayor: ‘It takes a village to raise a child’

CITY of San Fernando Mayor Edwin Santiago said that it takes a village to raise a child because everyone needs to be concerned about the community including the well-being of children.

Santiago stressed this when he led a recent symposium dubbed Community-Based Early Years Fair at the Heroes Hall here.

“I always say that it takes a village to raise a child because everyone needs to be concerned about our community in promoting the well-being of children,” Santiago said.

“Inter-Sectoral Dialogue on Shared Vision and Action for Quality Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD)” is the main theme of the event.

Local government units from North and Central Luzon gathered here to discuss practices which provide quality education to the youth.

Dr. Teresita Inciong, ECCD Council vice chairperson and executive director, praised the city government's initiatives of providing excellent and sustainable early childhood education.

“I just want to thank Mayor Santiago, because I'm so impressed with him for having a lot of knowledge and has great love about childhood education. So I am confident with his leadership, 0-4 year old children will be given proper care and good education,” Inciong said.

Inciong stated that parents should also do their part in molding the capabilities of their children.

“The government is doing its best to ensure the development of the children, but of course, parents should also do their part in properly raising their children, not just the local government,” Inciong added.

During the event, Santiago presented the city's routines in achieving universal and quality ECCD.

Inciong thanked the mayor for his support to the project.

“I'm so happy that the assembly was held here in San Fernando, where I can share with you the best practices of our early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) best practices which were all strengthened. We have this statement we keep on believing, “ECCD is the answer key to social development,” Santiago said.

Local chief executives from the cities of Sorsogon, Santiago, and Mankayan Benguet also shared their respective strategies on childhood care.
