Pacete: A date with CHMSC students

IT IS an honor to have been invited by Gilbert Taguines (events management adviser) and Rose Jean Contrevida (program head) of Carlos Hilado Memorial State College–Talisay (College of Industrial Technology) to be a resource person in their Hospitality Management Convention 2018 on September 26.

I was tasked to speak about “Philippine Protocol in Dealing with VIPs, Government Dignitaries, and Royalties in Tourism Operations.”

The event was held at La Proa, L Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City. That was a special gathering where the students taking up Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management were in their corporate attire.

The occasion was also an opportunity for me to inform a bigger crowd that Silay City is hosting an International Rondalla Festival on November 3 to 11, 2018 at Natalio G. Velez Sports and Cultural Center.

CHMSC is also a recipient of the outreach program of the said festival.

Dr. Ramon Santos and Mayor Mark Golez will further explain the event during the press conference in Silay on October 9.

For the future managers in the tourism industry, the protocol is very important.

It is a code of precedence in a rank and status and correct procedure in diplomatic exchange and state ceremonies.

For short, it is a code of behavior, especially among diplomats or rulers.

In the tourism world, the protocol is a standard practice being followed when it comes to correct procedure used in ceremonies and other activities related to tourism.

I explained to them the role of the protocol officer. It is a fact that not all towns and cities in Negros Occidental have trained protocol officers.

This training was given to us when I was still in the Tourism Office by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

I used my training when the Silay City Government allowed me to function as a protocol officer in meeting dignitaries and VIPs at the airport.

CHMSC Hospitality Management students were made to demonstrate how to meet and greet VIPs, manner in boarding an official visitor, function of those assigned in the reception line, turn-over ceremony sequence, a toast for the Guest of Honor, procedure in the Signing of the Memorandum of Agreement with the aid of protocol ladies, and the proper way of introducing a guest speaker.

We also took up the practical way to handle photo ops, rendering of arrival honors, escorting a guest at the walking tour, the arrangement at the presidential table, table seating during the official dinner, proper introduction based on age, sex, and rank, dinner program sequence, and attire for the official events.

My one hour and a half are very short to unload what I know in the protocol. I am sure that the students enjoyed their new discovery. Next time, I want to talk about protocol in dating, kissing and bedtime management.
