DEFENDING men’s division titleholder Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma escaped a five-set thriller against Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) volleyball tournament yesterday at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Gym.
SWU dominated the first set, beating CIT-U, 25-15. But CIT-U bounced back and won the next two sets, 25-18, 25-22, to take a 2-1 lead and a win away from clinching the game.
SWU squeaked past CIT-U by winning the fourth set, 25-20, and the fifth and deciding set, 15-10.
University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), last year’s runner-up in both the men’s and women’s division, picked up a pair of wins.
USJ-R swept USPF in its own backyard, 26-24, 25-22, 25-22, in the men’s division.
USJ-R also had a three-set sweep in the women’s division, 25-14, 25-10, 25-6.
Meanwhile, University of Cebu (UC) outclassed Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) in three sets, 25-10, 25-19, 25-13. (EKA)
