OWNING a pet has become a popular trend these days, and with this comes the proliferation of pet-friendly apartments, condo units, and other establishments. But what we must remember as pet parents is that to own a pet is to enter into a lifelong commitment—a journey that requires patience and dedication. Without understanding of their needs and lifestyle, we imperil the lives our furry, scaly, whiskered, and plumaged friends.

One man named Wilson Bangayan envisioned a community where all people are responsive to the needs of their pets, so all pets are provided with the care that they deserve. To fulfill this vision, Bangayan opened Pet Zoofari, one of the largest boutique pet stores in Mindanao.

Pet Zoofari, with its zoo-safari concept, is the only one of its kind in the Philippines. To make the trip inside the store seem like an outdoor adventure, Bangayan had its interiors designed to resemble a safari that reflects the natural habitat of animals. But unlike real zoos and animal sanctuaries, Pet Zoofari offers a wide selection of pets that you can bring home.

Among the animals you can find inside are birds (parakeets), reptiles (snakes, iguanas, bearded dragon lizards, Burmese python, geckos), freshwater fish (goldfish, angel fish, carp, rummy nose, mickey mouse, molly, guppy, black moor), rabbits (local breed, lion head, dwarf), hamsters (teddy bear, Siberian, Roborovsky), white mice, and an assortment of dog and cat breeds. To guarantee that the pets they sell are in tip-top condition, Bangayan buys from reputable breeders only. Before he puts them on sale, he sends a veterinarian to check up on their condition and administer complete vaccine shots.

For parents who are thinking of introducing pets to their kids, Bangayan recommends starting with small animals such as rabbits, hamsters, and white mice. For those who have hectic schedules, an aquarium full of fish makes a good companion and a perfect house decoration. Pet Zoofari sells fish tanks of varying sizes that you can easily find the one that fits your kitchen tabletop or living room space. They also offer aquarium maintenance services for a fee if you feel you can’t manage cleaning the tank on your own. Talk about great customer service!

Bangayan, who finds setting up fish tanks a therapeutic hobby, also created the “Design your own aquarium section” so customers can make a creative simulation of the sand, rocks, pebbles, and plant arrangement. This activity helps customers develop fondness for keeping and setting up an aquarium at home.

The cost for buying reptile animals costs P300 to P15,000 only, while the price of dogs or cats ranges from P7,000 to P30,000. A P2,000 budget is also enough to purchase an aquarium set. Unlike other pet stores, Pet Zoofari does not have a lingering pet odor because all animals are kept in enclosed but well-ventilated areas. This allows visitors to explore the shop without worrying about the smell.

Pet Zoofari also has shelves and racks of pet food and treats, grooming products, convertible cushions, collars and leashes, carrier and cages, and a variety of clothing items and accessories (my favorite is the Disney section). Although they seem to have everything that your pet needs, Bangayan still plans to introduce more pet varieties, products, and hopefully, add more staff to strengthen their grooming services.

For Bangayan, coming to Pet Zoofari is a form of rejuvenation, a diversion from his busy schedule as a businessman. He wishes to bring this form of relaxation to people by inspiring them to become pet owners.

Our pet preferences may differ, but whether we’re fish, snake, bird, cat, or dog lovers, one thing remains the same, and that’s the happiness they bring into our lives.

You may visit Pet Zoofari at the second floor of Abreeza Mall, beside Yakimix.
