Sula: Harry's nightmare

YOU can't play with the devil in his own game and expect to win. It's frontloaded and it's fraught.

Ninoy Aquino once said that a pact with devil is no pact at all. History validated that.

Today, the spox is spooked. He thought probably he was ahead in the game. Then came the comeuppance. He was kept in the dark about his master's whereabouts. And then he had to wiggle out of it to save face or his job. Later his boss, told everyone and sundry when the sky gray and said" Forget it, boy. You can't hack it as senator. Not in my time, anyway"

It hurt badly. All along, he expected an endorsement for being a such a brownnose. Instead, he got a dis-endorsement. So the next day, a media briefing was suddenly cancelled. The spox wasn't available. He filed a leave, indefinite, too, probably. Could a resignation letter to follow? Not unlikely.

At the moment, Harry the Good is struggling with Harry Not-So-Good. Jekyl is playing hide-and-seek with Hyde. I doubt if he has still the faith, and doubt even more if he still wants the job. Will the real Harry, the advocate of human rights, please stand up?

Once upon a time, so it is believed, Harry had a dream. That is to become a senator. He took up law at the state university, got into human rights advocacy, mostly pro-bono. Everybody loved him for what he was doing.

Somewhere along the way, he realized it wasn't enough. The sky was dark, poor people were being killed left and right, and lies and profanities were spread around like crazy. Lo and behold, he seized the day , not to make a difference, as he used to, but jumped with glee as he decided to sleep with his" enemies. From then on, it was inevitable that he would carom in the slippery slope.

He would scoffed at human rights issues. He kowtowed with his master who thought criminals had no human rights because they were not humans in the first place. Then one day, the real Harry stood up for who he was. He was indignant that the architect of martial law said no one was arrested or jailed. For the first time, he discerned a pure, inconvenient lie. And damned it.

That probably tipped the scale against him.

He had heard the familiar strain before so often. Robredo was weak and cannot lead this country. Trillanes was a bobo. It's Sharon's husband's fault that juvenile delinquency has gotten worse after his bill became a law.

It's the same tune that rings loud in his ears. It’s maddening. You can't win. You can't win. After all has been said and done, it looks Harry's crossover went for naught. His dream was dashed against the very fragile rocks of his own making.

"Come, Helen, come", Dr. Faustus said, "and give my soul again".
