Abellanosa: Don’t criticize the president?

A FEW days ago, some supporters of the President posted on Facebook a letter expressing their deep and continual support for him. If I am to write a letter to the President, this is what I have to tell him.

Dear Mr. President, how can critics not examine your words if in the first place they are “obviously foul and controversial?” Are you expecting that the Commission on Human Rights will not react when you said that you are concerned with human lives more than human rights? And how can people not react when you called God stupid and made rape jokes among others?

Your supporters say that they are ashamed of the people in their country. I hope that they will be ashamed of you too, for saying a lot of things that have made this country shameful. I will say this in Cebuano to make it clear: “nagto-o mog kamo ray na uwaw para sa Pilipinas? Duha na mi ka tuig nga na uwaw para sa Pilipinas sukad pa sa 2016.” This is a country whose leadership has lost its decency. And yet many would insist that decency is not an issue.

Again, your supporters blame people for not having morals, ethics, discipline etc. They are very correct Mr. President! Discipline is something you cannot give us. We must be the one to do it Mr. President. We have to do our work in our respective stations in life. We should submit our requirements of time, pay our “utang” on time, come to work on time, and respect our employers through every word and action that we say. That is why I never believed in your promise in 2016 that you can finish the drug problem in six months.

And then, again, Mr. President, people are blamed for putting you on the news 24/7. They say that of all the presidents, you were left alone since the time you took oath. In the first place, “wala pay daghang channel sa panahon ni Quezon, samot na sa panahon ni Osmena ug ni Laurel.” But granting that indeed you were unfairly treated, then fine – let me praise you for what you should be praised. One, I admire your decision to end contractualization. Two, I was hopeful when you appointed Gina Lopez. Three, I admire your “hate for drugs.”

Apparently, there are some good things that are happening under your administration. But there really is a problem. You lack consistency. Why did you appoint an ex-General to replace Gina in the DENR? You said you hate drugs but I hope that before your term ends, Peter Lim will be arrested.

I agree that news reports should also say something good about you. What I cannot accept is the fact that many of your supporters are lovers of fake news. And the problem is they just don’t carelessly share, they deliberately create fake news just to defend you.

I am writing this letter because I am worried of our future. I do not claim that I “love” (this country) because love is such a debatable word. Do not worry Mr. President, I am not a drug addict and neither am I a member of NPA. I am not also the president of the CBCP and am not a graduate of UP or Ateneo. I hope you will understand that some of those who dissent and are dissatisfied with your administration do not fall under the categories you and the military have in mind. FYI your Red October does not bother me. I am not a believer of colors Mr. President. I did not vote for PNoy, just to be honest.

I am writing this without hatred. I also do not intend to offer any apology, and I also would not care if people will unfriend me in FB.

Finally, it is true that the problems in this country, fairly speaking, are not all your creations. True, you inherited them from Cory, Ramos, Estrada, Gloria, and Noynoy. But precisely, there is another thing which, by the way before I forget, I cannot but mention. Some if not many of our problems were also due to the older Marcos. But, “nganong gipa lubong man nimo siyas Libingan ng mga Bayani” and not contented you want his son to replace you?

Prayers for your health.
