‘Illegal recruiter’ charged for duping 4 applicants

A SUSPECTED illegal recruiter from Tacloban, Leyte will remain in jail while the trial of her case in court is ongoing.

Cebu City Assistant Prosecutor Rogelio del Prado recommended no bail for Rosel Basconcillo, who was charged with illegal recruitment in large scale before the Regional Trial Court.

Basconcillo allegedly duped four job applicants in Cebu City into bogus employment abroad, making them cough up a total of P80,000 for supposed processing fees.

“Evidence offered by the complainants would support their claim that they paid the amount representing their placement fee and the failure of the respondent to deliver her obligation to find them employment in Dubai,” read del Prado’s resolution.

The applicants are Sherwin Destacamento, Michael Neir Cabansag, Norberto Villamonte and Edgardo Hermeja.

Villamonte and Hermeja are from Cebu City. Destacamento and Cabansaga hail from Talisay City and Cagayan de Oro City, respectively.

In their complaint-affidavit, the applicants said that Basconcillo enticed them to work in Dubai, telling them she had a connection with a recruitment agency there.

The accused later asked each applicant to pay P20,000 as processing fee. The applicants shelled out a total of P80,000 from their pockets.

After receiving the payment, Basconcillo reportedly started to avoid the applicants. She was only forced to communicate with them when the applicants threatened to report her to the police.

The applicants later discovered that Basconcillo was not authorized to recruit workers or operate a recruitment agency. (GMD)
