Benguet teachers compete in sports, IP games

AS PART of the indigenous people’s (IP) month and culmination of the teachers’ day celebration, mentors from Benguet took time out to compete in different sports and indigenous games held in the province.

Benguet Division Sports Coordinator Ceasar Luma-ang said in commemoration of the fourth staging of teachers’ day celebration in the province, Benguet public and private school teachers in the elementary and secondary schools compete in a one day tournament with at least five different IP games played at the Wangal Sports Complex oval.

La Trinidad topped the kadang–kadang (wooden stilts) men’s division with Tuba coming in at second as Kapangan placed third. In the distaff side, Tuba took home the title while Kabayan and Bokod placed second and third respectively.

Bokod snatched the title in the yakyak-ing/jajakking with Bakun and Mankayan placing second and third, respectively.

In the tug–of-war contest, Mankayan lorded the competition as Bakun and La Trinidad settled for second and third while in the women’s division, La Trinidad bagged the championship as Itogon and Sablan.

La Trinidad took home another title in bunong braso while Tublay and Mankayan finished second and third respectively while Kabayan was hailed the champion in the women’s category with La Trinidad and Mankayan placing second and third.

Aside from the IP games during the Teachers’ Day, sports activities were staged such as basketball, volleyball, table tennis, darts and chess.

Due to the large number of teams for volleyball and basketball, the group was divided into five divisions which compose of northern, central, southern Benguet and private schools.

Northern Benguet comprise the districts of Mankayan, Buguias, Bakun and Kibungan. Central Benguet is composed of the districts of Atok, Tublay, La Trinidad and Kapangan while the southern division includes districts of Sablan, Tuba, Bokod and Itogon I and II. The elimination games were conducted per division which started last August.

La Trinidad scored the championship in men’s basketball edging Mankayan who settled for first runner-up while Benguet State University wounded up second runner-up.

In men’s volleyball, Tublay toppled Sablan in the championship with Mankayan settling for third while La Trinidad bagged the title in the distaff side as Itogon II and Mankayan salvaged second and third place, respectively.

In 9-ball billiards, Kabayan went home with the title after defeating Schools Division Office with Kibungan placing third.

Kabayan also topped the 8–ball competition edging Schools Division Office.

In table tennis (women singles), Mankayan was declared the champion as Itogon II placed second while Kibungan settled for third.

In the women doubles, Atok took home the championship as Itogon II placed second with Schools Division Office finishing third.

Mankayan was also the run-away winner in darts beating La Trinidad while the women’s title went to BSU with Buguias settling for second as Schools Division Office salvaged third.

Atok lorded the chess competition while Sablan and Kibungan came in second and third.
