Paulino retires Fajardo to wrest WBA Asia tilt

CRIS Paulino overwhelmed Jomar Fajardo with his flurry of combination to secure the World Boxing Association super flyweight (WBA) Asia south title on October 6 at the Justice George Malcolm Square, People's Park.

Paulino of the Bebot Elorde Boxing Gym picked his opponent right from the opening round until Fajardo's corner called it quits at the end of the sixth round in the main event of the Great Fights at the Height hatched by boxing promoter Raffy Panagan.

Riding high on his four-fight win streak, Paulino secured his fifth straight victory, knocking out two of his opponents while retiring two out of his five wins to improve his record to 18-3 of the event sanctioned by the Games and Amusement Board backed by Black Mamba, RCG Global, Tiongsan, Suntrust, Baguio's Finest Security Agency, BAMACO, Paul Lalwani and 4x4 Construction.

Fajardo’s manager, Brico Santig of the Highland Boxing Gym in La Trinidad, Benguet waived the fight before the start of the seventh round as he saw enough beating by his fighter.

“Masyadong stiff yung katawan, halos ayaw sumuntok,” said Santig of his ward who suffered his 11 defeat out of his 29 fights.

Fajardo earned the title shot after his split decision win against former world champion Edrin Dapudong in June this year.

In the supporting main event, featherweight Juanito Paredes stopped Robin Dingcong in the sixth round with a knockout to improve his record to 5-5 - 1 while Ryan Rey Ponteras and Ricardo Sueno settled for a draw in their 10 round flyweight contest.

Super flyweight Prince Andrew Laurio earlier scored a second round stoppage of Jopher Marayan as he remain undefeated in his nine bouts of the event also backed by Jomarcan Construction, M.A. Camilo Trucking, Newtown Plaza Hotel, Fitotech Corporation, Extra Ordinaire Janitorial Services. R.U.A Aquino Construction, TG Home Builders, and Allied Hospital Supply Int'l Corp.

Jayson Vayson went the distance against Ronald Alapormina for a unanimous decision victory in their six rounder minimumweight contest as debuting Ian Gasco downed Jameson Lingbanan in the third round of their four rounder welterweight bout. (Roderick Osis)
