Sungduan: Mountain Spirits

FILIPINOS in the United States are given an opportunity to learn and know more about their country’s own unique traditional arts and culture.

This is through the presentation of the Mountain Spirits: Textile and Folk Exhibit at the Mills Building, Montgomery Street, San Francisco which is under the Hinabi Project of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and supported by the Philippine Department of Tourism USA headed by Tourism Attache Purificacion Suanding-Molintas.

“The exhibit at the Mills Building is a manner of educating our Philippine American millennials about their Philippine heritage,” she said.

She added that the activity which opened on September 17 and ends on December is also a way of introducing the Philippine destinations to art enthusiasts about the Philippine culture and heritage.

Meanwhile, Molintas warmly welcomed the Philippine delegation from the Kalinga, Gaddang and Subanon communities led by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in San Francisco. The delegates performed cultural presentations at the Samsung Hall, Asian Art Museum; the historic International Hotel on Kearny St., and at the Kalayaan Hall, Philippine Consulate.

Elated to witness the event is Father Leonard Oakes, Vicar of the Holy Child and St. Martin Episcopal Church in Daly City. He lauded NCCA, organizers, and the performers of the event for their initiative to educate others through storytelling and celebrations.

“The Philippine delegations from Kalinga, Ga’dang and Subanon have brought with them their ancient ancestral beads, textiles, and instruments and indeed they brought with them the spirit of their ancestors alive once again in the global scenario,” he said.

Also featured under the Hinabi project is the showing of the weaving destinations of the Philippines and the premiere showing of Living Asia’s “The Hinabi Weavers of the Cordilleras and Ilokos” with NCCA’s Dayaw International Performers from the Kalinga, Gaddang and Subanon Communities.

Another event is the 72nd Community Reception at the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco. All these activities are also part of the celebration of the Filipino American History Month this October.

With these undertakings many will appreciate and understand more about the beautiful and unique Philippine cultural heritage and traditions. May Filipinos living in the US find time to visit the ongoing exhibit.
