Oro to amend ‘motorela’ ordinance

THE Cagayan de Oro City Government will reconsider the request of motorela drivers and operators to amend the city ordinance that sets only six passengers as its maximum loading capacity.

Motorela federations insisted that some motorela designs are bigger and can actually carry a maximum of 8 passengers rather than the allowed 6, as per city ordinance.

"We admit that the city did not catch up with the designs so we will consider this request because it is actually valid," City Administrator Teddy Sabuga-a said.

But to do this, Sabuga-a said they agreed with the motorela operators and drivers that the city will initiate an inventory so that motorelas operating in the city will all be accounted for.

This way, the city can put stickers to each of the motorela unit that will indicate their passenger capacity.

While the city may allow expanding the passenger capacity, Sabuga-a pointed out that they will however be strict in prohibiting passengers riding beside the motorela driver.

"All should be seated at the passenger seat for their safety and for the driver's convenience," he added.

The inventory shall also be an opportunity for the city to propose to the motorela transport sector to modernize, he said.

"The mayor's direction is, we are already entering the year 2022 and the government projected that on this year, Cagayan de Oro will be a metropolis and we have to behave like one, so we have to modernize and to improve, including our transport sector," Sabuga-a said.

Sabuga-a said they will urge motorela manufacturers to participate in their Motorela Mordenization Challenge to possibly come up with a uniform design for all the motorela units in Cagayan de Oro.
