Wife of wanted NPA platoon leader surrenders

BARELY a week after the wanted platoon leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) was arrested in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, his wife surrendered to the authorities Wednesday, October 10.

In a press release sent to the media yesterday, Captain Ruel Llanes, civil military operations officer of 303rd Infantry Brigade (IB) of the Philippine Army based in Murcia town, said Rubelyn Gelacio Herrera is an alleged NPA member under the Medical Team 1, Sangay ng Platoon Propaganda, South West Front, Kilusang Rehiyong-Negros.

She is the wife of Joebert Herrera, who was arrested by authorities following the service of two warrants for multiple frustrated murder and murder at his residence in Barangay Camindangan, Sipalay City on October 4.

The two arrest warrants with no bail were issued by Judge Fernando Elumba of Regional Trial Court Branch 61 in Kabankalan City on October 25, 2012, in relation to the group’s revolutionary actions in the previous years.

Herrera was one of those suspects who reportedly attempted to assassinate an army officer.

In a press statement, Colonel Alberto Desoyo, commander of 303rd IB, said the government is thankful for Rubelyn’s decision to return to the fold of law.

“This is a proof that despite their wrong path, the government will not stop to urge them to return to the government,” he added.

Rubelyn will be provided with the government's Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program which will give her livelihood assistance and other support.

At present, 94 rebel returnees have benefited the Negros First Army Wellness Program of the provincial government of Negros Occidental and the 303rd IB.
