Custodio: Happy endings

THIS is about happy endings. I believe that it’s my life lesson. We all want it, and have a pretty good idea what it is made of and so I figured, why not talk about it? We often think of happy endings in the premise of fairy tales where the protagonist always wins and walks off into the sunset after overcoming serious obstacles. Right? Well yeah, who doesn’t want that? I would! Always!

Before the weekend, I learned that a diver went missing off Samal. He had been spearfishing, which I’m guessing is his favorite thing to do because he had a lot of fish catch pictures. (Okay, so I lurked a bit, we had common friends!) Over the years, I have read about people gone missing during a dive, never to be seen again by friends and family. It is such a sad thing. So sad that I have kept my diving skills at introductory level. Anyway...

He was found the following day, thank God! He had been adrift off Samal Island overnight and was apparently found still holding on to his prized catch! (I have not seen pictures with the fish but SunStar had a picture of him during the rescue.) I am truly happy for him, his family and friends. Such a happy ending, a perfect ending to their week! This is what fairy tale happy endings are made of! We thrive on these happy stories from other people and experience it vicariously through them!

We love happy endings and it’s exactly the reason why I was bummed to find out that a college crush recently passed away due to a heart attack. It was sad to learn of someone dying young, even more that he left behind a child who looked up to him. A friend had so kindly took a screenshot of his child’s post — a tribute to his father and it was absolutely heartwarming as it is heart wrenching. The offspring recounted childhood memories and tales that bound them together, thought of him as a badass person who achieved a lot in life but more importantly, he was even more badass as a father. He not only taught him how to make his bed, be better at Math and how to be a critical thinker, he showed him unconditional love and that no matter what, he will always be loved, guided and supported.

I think any parent would be proud to learn that their child appreciates their efforts and aspires to be better because of their influence. Although he died too soon, I think he will be happy to know that he has done his job as a father well.

There are happy endings in every situation, that’s what I believe. They may not always be fairy tale-ish and sometimes it takes time to happen, but they do. We just need to know how to look for it and where. Sometimes they’re disguised as heartbreaks and disappointments but in the end, all things will be good, we learn, move on and be happy.

Happy Sunday Everyone! :)
