UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) solidified its position for a spot in the semifinals of the boys’ division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) volleyball tournament after a win over last year’s runner-up Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma yesterday at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) volleyball court.
USJ-R took the opening set, 25-19, before SWU evened it up by taking the second set, 25-20.
It was in the third set that USJ-R showed utter dominance by beating SWU, 25-9. It was close at first in the third set, but USJ-R made an 8-0 run for a 19-5 lead thanks to the offense of Jay Tadatada and Rico Academia Jr.
USJ-R still has one more game left against unbeaten defending champion University of San Carlos (USC), while SWU’s last game is against USPF.
USJ-R sits at third place with a 5-2 slate, while SWU is fourth with 4-3. USC is at the top with 7-0, followed by USPF at second with 6-1.
USC got its seventh win after a sweep of University of Cebu (UC), 25-11, 25-16.
In the girls’ category, USJ-R beat USC, 25-14, 25-16. USPF, on the other hand, dropped Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), 25-27, 25-19, 25-23.
The University of Cebu (UC) squeaked past University of the Visayas (UV) in five sets, 25-21, 12-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-10, in the men’s division.
Defending women’s division champion SWU and USJ-R also picked up victories in the women’s division.
SWU defeated Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU), 23-25, 25-12, 25-10, 25-19 and USJ-R won against UC, 25-8, 25-18, 19-25, 25-9. EKA
