USPF faces USJ-R in finals

DEFENDING champion University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) face off in the girls’ division finals of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) volleyball tournament after winning their second semifinal games at the USPF.

USPF swept the University of San Carlos (USC), 25-21, 25-18, while USJ-R dropped the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), 25-18, 26-24.

Both teams won their first two games in the semifinal round and will face each other next week for a preview of the best-of-three girls’ division finals that will start on Oct. 28.

Meanwhile, the boys’ division semifinals is set with defending titleholder USC, last year’s runner-up Southwestern University (SWU), advancing along with USPF and USJ-R.

SWU handed USPF its first defeat in the tournament, 25-22, 16-25, 25-22, while USJ-R defeated USC, 20-25, 25-15, 25-18.

USPF is the top seed after finishing the elimination round with a 7-1 slate. USC, SWU and USJ-R ended up with identical 6-2 records. After the quotient system was applied, SWU finishes second, USC ranks third and USJ-R is fourth. (EKA)
