"HE who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much.î (Luke 16:10)

W. Wiersbeís Wycliffe Handbook of Preaching and Preachers narrates a story about Hudson Taylor who was to speak at a meeting in a schoolroom in England in a stormy night. His hostess informed him that nobody would attend the meeting. However, Taylor was determined to go saying, ìI must go even if there is no one but the doorkeeper. "His effort yielded results though. Half of the crowd became missionaries while the others gave their children to missions save those who supported China missions for the next years. (1)

The story illustrates how faithfulness works - "He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much.î Hudson Taylor who was faithful in his promise to speak to a little group became the founder of China Inland Mission. Sad to say, may leaders nowadays donít possess what Hudson Taylor has. Many leaders are good at making promises, but lack the attitude to deliver. Needless to say, a lot make commitments specially in times when favor is asked but they do not have the capacity to fulfill.

Faithfulness is an indispensable ingredient in leadership. As a leader is a steward of his position, he ought to take care of it with all his heart, not to use it for personal aggrandizement. A faithful leader would do everything in his power for the good of his constituents. A faithful leader is one who delivers what he has promised, not just during election or appointment but most importantly after he was placed in position. A faithful leader is one who finishes what he has started, and one who finishes strong. A faithful leader is one who has the attitude of fulfilling what he has spoken regardless of the change of circumstances.

In the story, Hudson Taylor gave his word to speak at a small meeting. He could have canceled it the night when the storm started. However, he kept his word and fulfilled his commitment regardless of the circumstances. He was faithful to what he has spoken that no bad weather condition stopped him from fulfilling his commitment. In the end, his faithfulness paid off.

We need leaders like Hudson Taylor in the government. As the filing of candidacy concluded last week, we ought to consider among those who filed faithful people who could make their promises work for the common good. In this transition of our nation, we need statesmen, not politicians. Statesmen, as defined by James Freeman Clarke and quoted in Naval vs. COMELEC (G.R. No. 201785), are those who think of the next generation as compared to politicians who think of the next election.

We need leaders who are faithful. Let us choose wisely for our future and our childrenís future depend on the choices we make today.
