THE tandem of Jason Yu and Rogelio del Prado Jr. escaped with the overall team title in the 20th President’s Cup Golf Tournament at the Cebu Country Club over the weekend.

The pair scored a total of 121 in the 36-hole two-man team tournament and finished with an identical score with Baltaire Balangauan and Dominic Gotiong and the pair of Herbert Ong and Peter Po Sr.

Yu and Rogelio edged out the two teams in a countback to win the overall crown. The tandem scored 58 in the first round that used a best ball format and fired a 63 in the next round using the alternate shot format.

Aside from the overall champion, there were winners in three categories which were named after the club’s previous presidents.

Balangauan and Gotiong may have come short for the overall title but they did not go home empty-handed after winning the C.J Martin division with a score of 121 from rounds of 59 and 62.

Joy Anthony Ong and Ferdie Chua took second place after flashing a 65-59 card for a 124, while Toby and Anton Florendo finished at third with 125 from 62-63 scores.

Gilfer Alvarez and Abelardo Tan, meanwhile, finished with 125 from rounds of 59 and 66 and won the countback against Evans Tumaliwan and Robin Craze for the W.C Palmer division title.

Tumaliwan and Craze, who had identical 125 from a 58-67 card, settled for second place, while Ace Serafin and Wayne Congmon were a point behind and finished at third place.

The Anthony Paul division title went to Ong and Po, who scored 121 to beat Justin Uy and Yoshihiro Ito and the tandem of Joseph Yukayguan and Rodolfo Tiu, who both finished with 124, respectively.

In the individual guest division, Andrew Cañete shot a pair of 73s for a 146 to win over Archie Villa and Vic Gocela, who both shot 148 after two rounds. Villa took second place and Gocela settled for third after a countback.

Special awards were also given to the team with the day’s best score. Thomas Castillo and Jan-Jan Ybañez got the award for Day 1 with 58 and Jose “Bebot” Baldemor and Victor Yuvallo got the award for Day 2 after scoring 61.

The two-day annual tournament conducted in honor of the club’s current and past presidents attracted a total of 194 golfers. (RSC)
