DEFENDING champion Stella Maris Academy of Davao (SMAD) defended its title in the Davao Association of Catholic Schools (DACS) Sportsfest 2018 cheerdance competition on Saturday, September 1, at the St. Peter's College of Toril (SPCT).

SMAD, donning yellow and blue costume, impressed judges Dr. Pedrito Castillo of University of Mindanao, Dr. Juvy Tiongson of Davao City National High School, and Jerome Manapol of Philippine Women's College, with their energy and synchronization before some 1,500 spectators from 24 DACS member schools.

SMAD outclassed the University of Immaculate Concepcion and Assumption College of Davao that placed second and third, respectively.

Philippine Women’s College sports development office head Dr. Leah Cabang, chairman for cheerdance, explained that the judges were convinced by Smad's variety of movements and consistency.

"The judges said SMAD's choreography was also good," Cabang said.

The opening program of the meet, with a theme "Champions for Christ: Call to Serve and Holiness" was hosted by SPCT for the first time.

SPCT OSA representative Danny Louie Lico was elated of their successful hosting, saying, "Happy kaayo mi kay han-ay ang flow sa program ug worth it tanan preparation although pressure jud bago ang program (The program of the flow was smooth although we felt a little pressure before we started)."

DACS executive director Jimmy-Loe Dela Vega, speaking before 1,500 attendees on behalf of Dacs chairperson Dr. Rodilla Tumanda, said, "This sportsfest isn't about just competition but is more of solidarity and unity. Always consider your opponent as strength rather than adversary and make this an avenue to make friends so that we can build a community of Catholic schools. Enjoy the sportsfest."

He also urged everyone to support the meet that will run from September 3 to 8 in different venues. (ABM)
