THE days of public utility jeepney (PUJ) and multicab drivers who cut their trips are numbered.
Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 7 Director Eduardo Montealto said his office is now looking for ways to stop these erring drivers.
“Don’t worry. These drivers will be held responsible. We will look for a way,” Montealto said during a public hearing on the petition for fare increase.
The petition was filed by the Basak-Lapu-Lapu City Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association, who asked for a P2.50 increase in the minimum fare for PUJs, making the minimum fare P9.
During the hearing, worker Edward Natido opposed the increase of the minimum fare to P9, saying Manila rates should not be used in Cebu. He also said the commuters pay twice because some drivers wouldn’t complete their routes if traffic is heavy and when it’s already late. So the commuters have to take another ride to complete the trip.
He identified these drivers as those plying the routes of Plaza Housing-Lahug (who trip-cut in J.Y. Square), Minglanilla (who trip-cut in Tabunok) and Naga (who trip-cut in Lawaan, Talisay). (JKV)
