Lapu-Lapu mayoral election next year a 4-cornered fight

PAJO, LAPU-LAPU CITY Barangay Captain Junard “Ahong” Chan has announced his intention to run for mayor in Lapu-Lapu City under the PDP-Laban party.

Rolando Patalinjug has also confirmed his intention to run for the same post under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) ticket.

This makes the mayoral election in Lapu-Lapu City a three-cornered fight, with former congressman Arturo “Boy” Radaza also running for the same position.

This is not including an independent candidate who is running for mayor. Commission on Elections (Comelec) records show that Virgilio dela Cerna Cano, 57, from Barangay Pusok, has filed his certificate of candidacy for mayor.

Chan said he is running for mayor on orders of President Rodrigo Duterte due to his campaign against illegal drugs and corruption.

“You can’t stop the people if they want change,” Chan said.

Chan said his constituents wish for him to widen his programs on public service.

Barangay Pajo gives free medical checkup, dental services, livelihood training and issuance of barangay clearance. The barangay also provides free use of its E-Library, including printing services.

“Ninety percent of my constituents hope that Radaza would be replaced because for 18 years the Radaza administration hasn’t solved the city’s problems,” Chan said.

Radaza started serving the public in 2001. He was mayor for three terms, until he was replaced by incumbent Mayor Paz Radaza in 2010.

Chan cited as examples Radaza’s failure to clean the city’s public market, poor services at the city hospital, drainage problems and the lack of a housing program for the city’s homeless. This, despite the City’s resources to solve these problems, Chan said. He also mentioned Radaza’s alleged failure to develop Olango Island. (FVQ)
