PRO 7’s early ‘Christmas gift’ from Korea

THE South Korean Government donated 25 Hyundai patrol cars to the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 yesterday.

South Korean Consul General Oh Sung Yong said they have confidence in the local police despite the 180 who had been murdered between June 1 and Oct. 10.

Oh pointed out that the police were able to solve the two murders involving Korean nationals.

He said 900,000 of the 1.6 million South Koreans who visited the Philippines last year came to Central Visayas.

Oh, who was at the turnover yesterday morning, said they have several future projects in the region, including the donation of more than 100 motorcycles to the local police and the sending of Filipino police officers to Korea for the enhancement of their investigation skills.

Oh said they donated the patrol cars as an expression of the South Korean Government’s gratitude to the Filipino veterans, who served in the Korean War.

PRO 7 Director Debold Sinas said the vehicles, which will be distributed to the police offices in the cities of Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue and Cebu, will help police patrol the streets.

Some officials from the business sector have stated that the killings indicate a growing state of lawlessness.

But Sinas said the business sector has nothing to worry about, adding that they are doing their best to maintain peace and order in Cebu and in other parts of Central Visayas.

He said they’ve received support from some businessmen, citing the P1-million donation they made for police officers who are facing complaints in their campaign against illegal drugs.
