City eyes boats as alternative transport mode

THE City Government of Iloilo is eyeing to utilize boats as alternative mode of transportation to decongest traffic in the city.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III said he will consult with the Department of Public Works and Highways of the concept of redesigning the city’s bridges to allow boats easy access and mobility in the city’s rivers.

Instead of using roads and the city’s main thoroughfares, commuters can make use of the boats as alternative transport.

At present, boats are unable to penetrate the city because bridges have low elevation which hinders its passage. This included the city’s solar-powered boats that were not used because of the state of the city’s bridges.

“I will be asking the help of DPWH kay ila ina ang mga bridges, on how can we redesign,” the mayor said.

Espinosa said the bridges from Parola Wharf, Arroyo bridge, Quirino-Lopez Bridge, Taytay Muelle Loney, Taytay Forbes, Jalandoni Bridge, Benigno Aquino Avenue & Taytay Diversion, Old Carpenter’s Bridge until the New carpenter’s Bridge.

Espinosa said he will refer the project to the Iloilo City Planning and Development and City Engineer’s Office to discuss the budget. (Carolyn Jane Abello)
