CREATIVITY starts with a good cup of coffee. At least, that’s the story with Daryll Sayson. His love for dessert, coffee and art motivated him to open Cafe Dessart, a one-of-a-kind cafe in Cebu that offers specialty desserts and personalized beverages with an auxiliary facility for virtual gaming. Sayson pours his creativity and passion in this project along with his creative team and partner, pastry chef Noel Umamali.

The team curates its wide array of coffee, desserts, and even rice meal choices with unique and mouthwatering designs, as it aims to promote arts and sciences in food and drinks while sharing the gastronomic experience to its guests.

“We serve desserts and coffee that are artistic using local flavors and local products like Malagos Chocolate, because the owner wanted to have a unique cafe where we can play around with our offerings. To add more oomph, he got the coffee printer and we are proud to say that we are the first in Cebu to serve personalized digital latte art,” said general manager Carmela Frias.

This digital latte art called “Selfieccino” allows customers to print their selfies or favorite photo on the foamed milk of their either hot or iced chocochinno, cafe latte or hot choco using a special coffee printing machine.

How does this work? One chooses what kind of drink he likes on the cafe’s Slurpy Slushies offerings, then he needs to send his selfie or whatever photo he likes to be printed to the barista through its Facebook page: Cafe Dessart. The photo is then scanned and reproduced on top of the froth for hot drinks, or whipped cream for iced drinks, using a flavorless food coloring. After 10 seconds, the drink, with the photo on top as the latte art design, will be in the customer’s hands.

Started in London, this trend combines what many people like to do these days: taking a selfie and drinking a cup of coffee—the reason why it became an instant hit, nudging businesses to step up their latte art game.

“Because of social media, the dining experience has completely shifted. We also want to offer more than just great food, drinks, desserts and services,” said Frias.

Its famous and artistic Chic-ky Naked Cakes that integrates naked cake and drip cake is also a must-try. It has different designs depending on one’s choice of flavor: Berry Cotton Candy, Coco Pops Fudge or Vanilla Popcorn Cheesecake. The best part? The drool-worthy chocolate drips will be drizzled on top of the dish right in front of the customer.

Aside from its offbeat menu, this cafe is also the first cafe to have Virtual Reality gaming in the city where one can experience being in a three-dimensional environment and interact with that environment during a game.

The contemporary and yet laid-back cafe exudes an unpretentious charm—making its customers feel comfortable, surprised with its out-of-the-box offerings which help them get their creative juices flowing.

Cafe Dessart is located on the second level of Northwood Square, F. Cabahug St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily.
