Environment office holds ‘Basura Run’

ALL is set for the conduct of the second “Basura Run” on Sunday, October 21, in Zamboanga City, a local official announced.

The “Basura Run” is an advocacy on cleanliness and fitness spearheaded by the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR).

Rodrigo Pagotaisidro, Public Service Officer IV of OCENR, said the activity will kick-off at 5 a.m. from the Guiwan village hall to Tugbungan village.

Pagotaisidro said the participants are required to bring empty sacks or any container with their name written on it for the collection of plastic and styrofoam waste that they can find in the course of the run.

Registration fee is P50 for each participant.

Pagotaisidro said the main objective of the activity is to instill public awareness on the importance of throwing garbage in proper bins to maintain cleanliness and to prevent flooding.

He said the activity is anchored on the theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution, If You Can’t Re-Use It, Refuse It.”

The first “Basura Run” was held on June 25. It started at the R.T. Lim Boulevard in the village of San Jose-Cawa-Cawa and ended at the Paseo del Mar in the village of Zone IV. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
