Quijano: Pacquiao to take on poor man’s Floyd

THAT Manny Pacquiao (60-7, 39 KOs) has handpicked Adrien Broner ( 33-3, 24KOs) to be his next opponent actually comes as no surprise.

Broner is a poor man’s Floyd Mayweather and if the Pacman is angling for a rematch, Broner is as safe a tune-up as you can get.

BRONER. He came into prominence when he defeated Antonio deMarco for the WBC lightweight title back in November 2012.

I thought he would be the next big star when he jumped all the way to welterweight to beat Paulie Malignaggi for the WBA diadem.

But in his next fight, the marauding Marcos Maidana would expose him to be a second-rate Floyd Mayweather copycat.

Sure he had the shoulder roll defense and the cocky attitude, but as shown in subsequent losses to Shawn Porter and Mikey Garcia, that was about it as he lacked Floyd’s blinding hand speed and ring generalship.

In his last fight, he fought Jessie Vargas to a majority draw. That Pacquiao handily defeated Vargas via decision back in 2016 should give you some perspective of how these two fighters match up.

PACQUIAO. The much ballyhooed rematch with Floyd seems to have rejuvenated Senator Pacquiao’s boxing career, providing it with some needed direction.

Since Floyd has declared he would be seeking a tune-up match, Pacquiao’s choice of Broner seems like a tactical move in cadence with a rematch nobody asked for and nobody wanted.

It could be interesting for the first four rounds with Broner holding his own.

But expect Pacquiao to take over the second half of the fight and prevail via unanimous decision.

VERBATIM. “I think Manny Pacquiao will walk right through Broner. It’s not a bigger fight than me versus Pacquiao. Me versus Pacquiao is a massive fight, globally.” --Amir Khan (http://www.worldboxingnews.net)

LAST ROUND. It’s on my best buddy Atty. Alan Siu who celebrates his birthday today. Cheers!
