Tell it to SunStar: Release info on party-list groups now

WE call on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to release pertinent information on those that filed certificates of nomination and certificates of acceptance of nomination of party-list groups from Oct. 11 to 17.

Even if Comelec is expected to start posting the tentative list of candidates on Nov. 5 as stated in Resolution 10429 (Oct. 1, 2018), we stress the necessity to analyze as early as now the qualifications of the reportedly 185 party-list groups, particularly the list of nominees and their programs of action.

Releasing this information online for all the world to see and scrutinize would show Comelec’s adherence to transparency and accountability. Doing so would also help bolster Comelec’s commitment in making the elections clean and honest.

Even if there had been news media organizations that already reported on the nominees of some party-list groups, the the media, election monitoring groups and the public could benefit from a more exhaustive information coming from the Comelec itself, particularly if readily accessible from its website.

Being transparent with information on party-list groups is consistent with enhancing the 2019 elections, a promise that was made by Sheriff Abas when he was confirmed by the Commission on Appointments as Comelec chair last May 23.--Kontra Daya

Roque won’t win

When Harry Roque officially announced his intention to run in the May 2019 elections, he said it was as nominee of a party-list group. That meant he accepted President Duterte’s claim that he could not win if he runs for a Senate post. But why is he running for senator now?--Ric Rey Dignos
