MGB to release results of Naga landslide probe

WILL someone be charged one month after the landslide that struck Sitio Sindulan, Barangay Tina-an in the City of Naga killed 78 persons? Will residents living the stricken area be allowed to go home?

There will be some of the questions that will be answered during a dialogue with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau 7 this afternoon.

The agency will also present the results of its ground penetrating radar (GPR) and georesistivity surveys (GRS) conducted by its geologists on the affected site that will reveal what really caused the earth movement.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu is expected to attend the activity along with DENR 7 Executive Director Gilbert Gonzales, MGB 7 Officer-in-charge Efren Carido and Environmental Management Bureau 7 Director William Cuñado.

According to Marian Codilla, information officer of MGB 7, the MGB Central Office had sent an investigating team to assess the ground in Sitios Sindulan and Tagaytay.

Playing the blame game

For a week, they conducted GPR and GSR surveys.

The City Government of Naga and the MGB 7 have been pointing fingers at each other over who is responsible for the tragedy.

Some survivors, with the help of lawyer and environmentalist Benjamin Cabrido, had said they would file a P1-billion damage suit against officials of Apo Land and Quarry Corp., its business partner CEMEX, MGB, DENR and the City Government of Naga.

Half of the amount will go to the survivors, while the other half will go to the rehabilitation of areas affected by the landslide. (SCG)
