FIFTY agriculture key players and stakeholders gathered for the launching of Agribiz Kapihan sa Negros to share their experiences; exchange ideas; and learn new agricultural technologies at the Provincial Capitol Social Hall in Bacolod City, Saturday, October 20.

The half-day activity is a collaborative effort between the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental led by Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. and the private sector groups, particularly the Negros Economic Development Foundation (NEDF) and Harbest Agribusiness Corporation.

Agribiz Kapihan sa Negros will be held every third Saturday of the month at the NEDF office.

Marañon said that Negros Occidental is an agricultural province and it has the potential to become the Food Basket of the Philippines but there is a need to keep pace with the new agricultural trends and he believes that this is a perfect venue to discuss the future of Negros Occidental agriculture.

Zac Sarian, a Ramon Magsaysay awardee and journalist, shared his knowledge in agriculture while Arsenio “Toto” Barcelona, president of Harbest Agribusiness Corp. said that Agribiz Kapihan sa Negros is not an organization.

It does not require membership, rather it is a gathering of those who want to share and learn insights from each other and who are willing to teach the young farmers.

Boyet Uychiat of Nisard presented Negros Occidental’s organic agriculture initiatives and invited the stakeholders to join the 13th Negros Island Organic Farmers Festival on November 28 to December 1, 2018 at the Provincial Capitol grounds.

Corthan Bearder, a 25-year-old Filipino-British, shared his insights on managing the 48-hectare farm of the Tortosa family in Cauayan while Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino updated the group on the programs and projects undertaken by his office.

Toto Paulino presented the challenges of raising native chicken while Chris Fadriga of Bago City explained the advantages of planting Cacao and its future market.

Ramon Uy of RU Foundry; Dr. Salacata of Twenty-six Herbs Garden Restaurant; Daisy Duran of Duran Farm of Bulacan; and Gerry Ledesma also shared their stories during the launching.

Ramon Ponce de Leon, NEDF chairman of the board of trustees, gave the closing remarks. (PR)
