16 NPA rebels surrender in Sibugay town

SIXTEEN suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels surrendered to the military on Saturday, October 20 in Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay, an official said.

Colonel Bagnus Gaerlan, the Army’s 102nd Infrantry Brigade commander, said the surrenderers consisted of 15 Militia ng Bayan, an NPA territorial forces, and one regular NPA member.

Gaerlan said they turned over a caliber .45 pistol and two shotguns with ammunition.

Gaerlan said the group surrendered through the efforts of Siay Mayor Jarvis Acosta and Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Obena, the Army’s 44th Infantry Battalion commander.

He said the NPAs have pledged loyalty to the government through an oath of allegiance.

He said the surrender of the group will minimize the violent incident and atrocities in the area of responsibility of the 102nd Infantry Brigade.

He said it will weaken the NPAs mass base support in Zamboanga Sibugay.

Major General Roseller Murillo, Army’s 1st Infantry Division commander, has commended the efforts of those who facilitated the surrender of the rebels. ( Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
