Blaze destroys P1.2M worth of property

FIRE struck Sitio Lower Sampaguita, Barangay Banilad in Mandaue City yesterday morning.

Three two-story houses made of concrete were destroyed, while three structures of mixed light materials and concrete were damaged.

Around P1.2 million worth of properties were lost to the blaze.

The fire started at the house owned by Eduardo Mendez, who was renting it out.

SFO1 Noel Codilla, fire investigator of the Mandaue City Fire Station, said they’re still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

He said they’re looking into reports that Rolando Molato, Mendez’s tenant who was renting the second floor, was cooking when his LPG tank exploded. Apparently, the hose that connected the tank to the stove was defective.

“Sa cause sa fire, under investigation pa. Oo, ato ni gitan-aw ang gi-alleged nga nagluto ni si Rolando Molato nya naay buslot ang hose nga connected sa LPG. Nag-leak ni, mao to mibuto og nakaingon sa sunog (The cause of the fire is under investigation. But yes, we’re also looking into the allegation that Molato was cooking. There was a hole in the hose that connects the tank and the stove. There was a leak, which may have resulted in the explosion that caused the fire),” Codilla said.

Molato and his neighbor Jake Osorio suffered first-degree burns.

The fire station received the alarm at 10:48 a.m. The fire was placed under control at 11:35 a.m., after it was raised to third alarm.

The City Social Welfare and Services has taken down the names of individuals affected by the fire. It has also distributed food to the survivors, some of whom have taken shelter in a nearby vacant lot. (Fe Marie Dumaboc, correspondent)
