Pacete: 2018 International Social Science Camp

IT IS an honor for me to have been invited by the Borres Youth Leadership Institute to be a resource person and facilitator in the Young Leaders’ Forum (YLF) on October 27, 2018 at Carlos Hilado Memorial State College. I was assigned to share and to react on the topic “What Can Every Youth Do to Promote and Accelerate Sustainable Development Goals in the area of Culture and Arts.”

For me, it is also an opportunity to invite the participants to come to Silay City on November 3 to 11, 2018 for the International Rondalla Festival. The participants will present to me their identified key issue and possible solution and action. My role is to provide them assistance, inputs and insights to their presentation. I will be sharing also my own personal and vicarious experiences being a cultural worker and a former tourism officer.

This event is being supported by the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the National Youth Commission. Social sciences are those mental or cultural sciences which deal with the activities of the individual as a member of the group. This is the definition provided by Edwin R. A. Seligman.

The major disciplines under social science include anthropology, economics, geography, history, law, political science, psychiatry, psychology, sociology and statistics. There are also semi-social sciences like ethics, education, philosophy and psychology and sciences with social implications like biology, geography, medicine, linguistics and art.

Lawyer Mark Borres, the founder and chief executive officer of Borres Leadership Institute Inc., believed that these various disciplines are essential in understanding diverse social issues and concerns that affect not only the youth and the nations of the world but the whole humanity as well.

Camp activities support the declared policy of the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013” that has been designed to produce graduates of basic education who are empowered individuals who have learned the foundations for learning throughout life, the competence to engage in work and be productive, the ability to coexist in fruitful harmony with local and global communities, the capability to engage in autonomous, creative, and critical thinking, and the capacity and willingness to transform others and one’s self.

My theme is centered on culture and the arts. Other themes include education, health, international relations, politics and governance, volunteerism and community outreach, environment, information technology and social media, youth development and empowerment, and business and tourism.

Camp highlights include opening-welcome ceremony, bylimpics, international academy, international night, institution visit, outreach activities, young leaders’ forum, plenary sessions, Philippine night competitions and the most awaited

“Kilos Kabataan: Youth for Positive Change,” a project proposal competition that will address youth or social issues.

Thank you very much for making me a part in your best effort to hone excellent future leaders for our beloved Philippines!
