Benguet bets pledge peaceful elections

CANDIDATES for the May 2019 midterm elections in the province of Benguet have signed a pledge for peaceful elections.

On Tuesday, October 23, Baguio-Benguet election supervisor Elenita Tabangin Capuyan noted close to 30 candidates vying for the different post in the province took part in the signing of the integrity pledge at the provincial capitol.

"It is like a peace covenant where all candidates running for elections in the provincial level of Benguet sign for them to have a promise they will uphold the laws of the Philippines, obey the election laws and all campaign do's and don'ts will be followed," stated Capuyan.

Aside from the signing of the peace covenant, the candidates also took part in the voters education campaign which will be continued by the election officers in 13 municipalities, added Capuyan.

Capuyan cited minor violations in the province during the previous elections which includes illegal posting of posters and distraction of election propaganda.

The election officer said the province remains one of the most peaceful in the country, with no election-related violence recorded.

In Benguet province, there are 32 candidates for vice-mayor, 29 for mayor and 284 for the different council seats in the 13 municipalities.

Three will vie for the lone congressional seat in the province, three will compete for governor while two are eyeing the vice gubernatorial position.
