Pet Kind of Love: Cupcake

Pet Kind of Love: Cupcake

Pet owner: Sassha Yu

Pet name: Cupcake

Pet breed: Shih Tzu

“Cupcake was a gift from my Aunt. I visited her once a week from when she was born, until I could pick her up at two months. I got her late in my senior year in high school, and I had to leave for college in Manila the next year. We bonded for about six months before I left, but no matter how long I’ve been gone, or who’s been feeding her, when I call, she comes to me. She knows I’m hers as much as she’s mine.”

What’s the best thing about your pet?

“She’s eight now, and she’s a cranky, old grandma. Her back leg got run over by a car when she was younger, but she’s the toughest of all my pets! She’s sweet with me, but even though she’s tiny, she thinks she’s a guard dog, and barks down any newcomers like she’s a German Shepherd!”

What tip can you give people who want to be responsible pet owners?

“Don’t let them get run over! (laughs). I was in Manila when it happened, but I get upset about it every time I see my little old lady have a hard time going up and down the stairs! Leashes are really important, even if they’ve been trained around cars, which she was. Also, lots of Shih Tzus are prone to getting allergies from food, so be careful what you feed yours! Luckily, Cupcake can eat just about anything and be fine! Be sure to check with your vet, or the internet about what food is hazardous to your dogs!”
