Councilor alarmed by rising ‘nanlaban’ deaths in Oro

A CAGAYAN de Oro City councilor wants to revisit the operations plan of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) in the conduct of their anti-drug operations.

This after Councilor Romeo Calizo noticed that the number of drug suspects killed in drugs operations in the city reached to 9 persons now. These persons all have allegedly fought back and resisted arrest from law enforcers.

Calizo, who is the chairman of the police, fire, and public safety committee, said he will ask authorities if planning is short and what can they do to improve it.

The city official said it is still important that these drug suspects be tried in court rather than having them dead.

But Calizo also noted that law enforcement units have to protect themselves.

"Okay unta kung mo give up sila, pero musukol man, of course the priority of our enforcement is to protect their lives also," he said.

(It will be fine if they surrender but then they fight back)

Calizo also urged families of the victims to report if they have any concerns in the conduct of these drug operations.

"Wala man mi mahimo kung wala pud moreklamo, so mas maayo unta naay complaint para atong matan-aw gyud," he added.

(We cannot do anything if no one will complain. That is why it is better if someone will complain so we can investigate)

The recent person killed in a drug operation was 30-years-old Jovanie Nazareno, resident of Barangay 35, this city. Police said Nazareno fired his gun after sensing that he was dealing with an undercover cop.

Authorities returned fire hitting the suspect twice on his chest which caused his untimely death.
