Editorial: Smaller Noche Buena feast?

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has recently released the suggested retail price (SRP) list of noche buena products.

Unfortunately, it is evident in the list that the prices of some popular products used for noche buena dishes have increased.

Data showed that there is an increase in the prices of fruit cocktail, sandwich spread, mayonnaise, spaghetti sauce, cheese, keso de bola, and tomato sauce.

Deolly Roque, DTI-Davao officer-in-charge for consumer protection, told SunStar Davao on Wednesday, October 24, that the increase may have been due to an increase in the prices of raw materials and inflation may have played part in it too.

This coming Christmas Eve, could it mean that there will be less and smaller portions of food that will be prepared by families?

It cannot be denied that the prices of some commodities in the market have increased. Sadly, the purchasing power of many Filipinos has not changed as salaries have barely increased to keep up with the increasing prices of commodities in the country.

While it is making steps to manage the prices of commodities in the market, the government must act faster to ensure that the prices can still be easier on the pockets of Filipinos.

If the government will not act fast, there might be less dishes on the table during Noche Buena or even Media Noche.

However, whether you have a feast on Christmas or New Year's eve, what is important is you are able to spend time with your family. Maybe this time, over a couple of dishes that you will truly enjoy.
