DEPARTMENT of Agriculture (DA)-Davao Research and Development Division launches their “Adlaw sa Patilaway” to promote use of adlai crop and other indigenous crops as a sustainable source of livelihood.
Anecita Telebangco, senior science research specialist of DA-Davao, said the food exhibition is a product of the research and development and a way to concretize the gathered information from their studies.
“Kani siya way pud para makita ang epekto sa mga nahimo nga research sa atong mga crops (This is a way for us to also see the effects of the research we have made on crops),” Telebangco said in an interview during the 2018 Stakeholder’s Technology Forum and Food Exhibit at Manambulan, Tugbok, Davao City.
Telebangco said in this way local indigenous crops can be promoted and hopefully can reach a market once more farmers will venture in planting and innovating products from the crops.
“We are hopeful pud unta na pagdugay kaning mga produkto sa food exhbit kay makakita ug mga business partners arun mas matabangan pa ang mga locals og farmers sa pag tanom (We are hopeful that in the long run the products in the food exhibit can find business partners so that we can also help locals and farmers in planting),” Telebangco said.
One of the indigenous crops used in the food exhibition is adlai. The adlai, which grows in different parts of the country, is a good alternative for rice and one of the major raw materials in making handicrafts like rosary beads.
Other indigenous crops used in the food exhibition are apali, an indigenous tubercrop; soybean, a legume rich in protein; and breadfruit a crop from Davao Oriental and Davao Occidental.
