MARIE Ernestine School in Budlaan, Cebu City has always been an advocate of a cleaner and greener community, so we practice the 4 R’s—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Restore. We also plant trees, hold coastal clean-ups and we make ecobricks.

Every September, we celebrate Science and Environment Month and this year, we had different activities like trash can making contest, ecohat-making, went on a tour of Nestor Archival’s Ecohouse and held a cleanliness drive.

This year’s theme was “Beat Plastic Pollution” and the chairpersons, teachers Jupel Labrador, Rachell Dela Cerna, Danica Siroy and Sherelyn Cañete, came up with the idea of the TRASHion show that will showcase the creativity and resourcefulness of the Ernestineans in grades four to 12.

The outfits that they wore for the catwalk were really awesome, and they showed that trash can be elegant and beautiful. Their outfits were made from recycled materials like sacks, newspapers, magazines, plastic wrappers, boxes, old CDs, bottle caps, used tarpaulins and old fabrics.

Indeed, there’s beauty (and even money) from trash if only we use our imagination, creativity and resourcefulness. The outfits are now on display at the school’s eco-room.
