Custodio: Gym thoughts

OCTOBER is almost over and as we welcome the November, well, I just wanted to say yes, you can now start writing down your new year’s resolutions. Hehe. Yup, and that's regardless of the fact that most of us fail in seeing these so-called promises reach fruition. Still, it is good practice, don’t you think?

For one, it allows us to reflect about how we’ve been doing the past ten or so months. It gives us a ballpark idea about how we have fared this year as compared to previous ones. It gives us an opportunity to assess our “performance” so that we can adjust our goals for the coming year. Of course we do this so that we can welcome 2019 with prepared and armed with positivity.

So this month I started going to the gym. After three years on my resolution list, I was finally able to do it! I go at least four times a week which is quite a feat since I admit I’m lazy about these things. Even more surprised that I actually enjoy going and I hope it stays that way.

I spend half my time doing cardio and since I would rather listen to music than watch TV while I’m on it, I also have a lot of time to think. In the three weeks that I have been gyming (of course, there’s no such word in the dictionary unless you include the online urban dictionary), I realized three things.

Things are much easier to do when you have the mindset for it. Sometimes that takes a while to achieve but once you do, easy does it! Of course, there will be challenges. However, we see them as temporary setbacks hat we can overcome rather than permanent walls that will make us feel stuck forever. With life experiences as in days at the gym, we know this to be true. Right?

The simplest things can be the most difficult thing to do. This week I had exercises that seemed too simple to do. I had to do calf raises while standing on the edge of a step board in three different foot positions and I was sweating buckets! My calves were burning! I had to laugh at myself for underestimating what seemed like an easy-peasy task. Boy, was I wrong! Underplaying things can bring about unexpected results that leave you wide mouthed--awed or appalled!

Endorphins work! I always get that warm happy feeling after gym and I think it has something to do with the release of this neurotransmitter! Of course it can go hand in hand with feelings of accomplishment but hey, no matter what, you end happy! Makes me think that there are times when we need to work on happiness to achieve it, when it doesn't come naturally.

In life, things don't always happen as we like it hence we need to make the choice and find ways to achieve it! Hope you had a fun-filled week!

Happy Sunday Everyone! :)
