City, clothes firm ink deal to train workers

THOSE who are interested in sewing may soon make an income out of this skill or hobby.

The Cebu City Council has authorized Mayor Tomas Osmeña to enter into and sign a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the City Department of Manpower Development and Placement and Metro Wear Inc., a company engaged in apparel manufacturing for export.

The resolution on the matter, filed by Councilor Sisinio Andales, was approved during last week’s regular session.

Under the draft MOA, Metro Wear will provide skills training along with 30 industrial high-speed sewing machines, fabrics and threads for the entire program.

Metro Wear will also source partnerships as well as shoulder the maintenance and repairs of the sewing machines.

It will also primarily supervise the training and set up sewing machines according to the City Government’s standard.

Aside from this, Metro Wear will also accommodate the training graduates for employment screening, trade testing and evaluation.

The City Government, on the other hand, will provide the venue subject for approval by Metro Wear, and recruit and screen applicants for the skills training program.

The City will also train the qualified trainees per batch for a period of 21 working days, eight hours per day from Monday to Friday.

It will issue a training certificate to successful trainees and endorse 30 graduates to Metro Wear every month.

Training materials, such as needles, computers and television units, among others, will be provided by the City.

No employer-employee relationship shall arise between Metro Wear and the trainees during the course of the training period.

“The first party (Metro Wear) does not assure employment to all qualified graduates since the hiring of manpower is dependent on the customers’ demand,” reads a portion of the draft MOA.

Once signed, the MOA will be in effect for one year and is renewable upon the agreement of the parties.

Metro Wear is a domestic corporation located in Lapu-Lapu City. RTF
