USC, USPF start Cesafi volleyball title defense today

UNIVERSITY of San Carlos (USC) is back to defend its crown in the boys’ division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) volleyball tournament after winning its final semifinal match yesterday, Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Cebu City Sports Institute Gym.

USC booted University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) out of title contention with a two-set sweep, 26-24, 25-18.

University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) grabbed the other finals spot with a sweep after beating last season’s runner-up Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma, 27-25, 25-16.

USJ-R, USC and USPF all have identical 2-1 slates in the semifinal round. USJ-R, which won its first two games in the round-robin semifinals, was eliminated due to the quotient system.

USC takes on USPF in the finals this afternoon at the USC Gym.

USJ-R is up against SWU for third place in the morning.

Meanwhile, reigning girls’ division titleholder USPF is also returning to defend its title against USJ-R also in the afternoon at the USC Gym.

Last weekend, USPF beat USJ-R in three sets, 25-21, 21-25, 25-17, at the USPF covered court in a preview of today’s finals.

USPF hasn’t tasted a defeat in the semifinal round and has the momentum coming in with the confidence-boosting win over USJ-R.

Sacred Heart School Ateneo-de Cebu (SHS-AdC) duke it out for third place honors in the morning.

Both the boys’ division and girls’ division finals are a best-of-three series. Game 2 for both categories is slated on Nov. 4, while Game 3, if needed, is set on Nov. 10. EKA
