Typhoon Rosita threatens boxing for a cause

BOXING promoter Brico Santig of the Highland Boxing Gym said the event slated Tuesday, October 30, will not push through because of Typhoon Rosita's expected landfall Tuesday morning.

"We regret to inform you that the Highland Brawl 5: Bangon Cordillera originally scheduled on October 30 (Tuesday) at the Malcolm Square in Baguio City will not push through as we are anticipating a strong Typhoon on Monday-Tuesday. As of this writing, we are looking at November 3 or 4, as the final date for the event same venue," Santig said.

At least three Luzon Professional Boxing Association (LuzProBA) titles will be up for grabs in the event featuring former World Boxing Council International bantamweight title holder Rex Wa-o, making his comeback after two years of absence.

The event presented by DMAD-Highland-Kings Edward International Boxing Promotion will also feature six professional and one amateur bout.

Wa-o of Tadian, Mt. Province will headline the box off against Dan Manosa of Metro Manila in eight rounds for the LuzProBA super featherweight title.

The 28-year-old last fought in 2016 where he suffered a fifth round technical knockout against Jeo Santisima for his third straight loss dating back to 2015 where he also yielded to Xian Qian Wei for the World Boxing Council Asian Boxing Council featherweight and the WBC Eurasia Pacific Boxing Council featherweight title.

In the co-main event, Jelbirt Gomera of La Trinidad, Benguet will take in Lloyd Jardeliza for the LuzProBA featherweight title while Romshane Sarguilla (La Trinidad, Benguet) squares off against Mervin Lulu (Malabon City) for the LuzProBA super flyweight title.

In the supporting bouts, a super featherweight bout between Rey Juntilla (La Trinidad, Benguet) and Junjie Lauza (Cavite) is expected to thrill fight fans while a super flyweight bout between Benjie Bartolome (La Trinidad, Benguet) and Lony Cadayday (La Trinidad, Benguet) will also take place.

Ador Torres of La Trinidad, Benguet squares off against Alejandro Anas of Baguio City in a six rounder middleweight contest while a featherweight match will be up between Mj Uduna of Kiangan, Ifugao and Gary Tamayo of Metro Manila.

Super bantamweights Jhun-Jhun Jimenez (Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya) and Marklin Itim clash in four rounds with flyweight Romeo Tenorio of La Trinidad, Benguet taking on Joshua Padual of Bulacan.

Saskia Fagyan of Bontoc, Mt. Province and Aryette Bayachan of La Trinidad, Benguet will raise the curtain in a three round amateur bout. (Roderick Osis)
