De Leon: Growing up? 8 texts that can be scarier than Halloween

TAKE comfort. This write-up is not going to make you throw up, freak out, or do any other bodily function that you would otherwise have control over. The whole world is already doing that to you, now.

Halloween is supposed to be the scariest day of the year. ‘Tis the season to be scary, or spook ourselves by binge-watching Kabayang Noli and other horror television specials.

But more than the supernatural entities and losing connection to the internet, there’s actually one person who can make our hearts beat faster (in a really frightening way), especially when she gets angry. (Oh you do don’t like her when she’s angry.)

And it’s no other than our moms, right?

Yeah. We’ve all been there.

Nothing really beats the horrifying feeling of being scolded by her; her text messages are scarier than the horror novels we read, and her angry voice would make our hearts jump, worse than the Conjuring's Valak.

Our legs would just keep on trembling as we move towards home.

Here are some of the most terrifying texts that we, Filipino millennials received from our moms that really made us scared, more than Halloween ever did:

8. When she calls you by your whole name: “Patrick Joven Santos de Leon!”

When she no longer calls you by your nickname, it’s time to say adios to your amigos.

7. When she’s not the only one who’s mad: “Umuwi ka na. Galit na Papa mo.” The next thing you know, all of your family members are angry at you. (At least that’s according to her.)

6. When she’s texting a friend: “Hi Alex, kasama mo ba si Pat? Hind pa kasi umuuwi yan. Paki sabi kanina pa ako tumawag.” Only to find out she texted almost all of your friends.

5. When she gets personal: “Abuso ka na. Umuwi ka na.” And you start asking yourself, “nagpaalam naman ako, anong ginawa ko?”

4. When she’s threatening you- “Huling alis mo na yan. Hindi ka na makakaulit sinasabi ko sa yo.” You better drop everything, book your Grab and go home.

3. When she’s so done: “Wag ka ng umuwi. Tinapon ko na lahat ng gamit sa labas. Itapon mo na rin yang cellphone mong laging lowbat.” You know it’s time to crash a friend’s place for the night.

2. When there are no words needed: ‘Mama- 20 missed calls’ Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!

1. When you lost her most valuable thing: “Inuwi mo ba yung tupperware na blue?” You either buy her a new one, or pray as you go home.

But at the end of the day we all know that our parents only mean well. These texts messages were all effective and they helped us become the disciplined career person we are today. And we’ll forever love them for that!
