SACRED HEART SCHOOL-ATENEO DE CEBU (SHS-AdC) bowed down to Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), 52-67, in the basketball finals of the 2018 Jesuits Athletic Meet (JAM) last Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the SHS-AdC Magis Eagles Arena in Canduman, Mandaue.
Dubbed as the ‘JAM Classico’, the highly-regarded ADMU had a dominant start with 12-4 lead. SHS-AdC kept it close after a strong second quarter and trimmed the lead down to four, 27-31.
Led by 7’1” center Kai Sotto, ADMU pushed on and never looked back, taking home the title this year.
Sotto, one of the most promising local prospects, had a monster game 24 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks. Forthsky Padrigao 12 along with four assists and five steals.
Koko Tuadles was SHS-AdC’s top performer with 16 markers and three steals, while Ralf Gesalem added 15, from five three-pointers.
Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) beat Xavier School (XS), 73-68, for third place honors.
Meanwhile, SHS-AdC also lost to ADMU, 0-1, in the football finals, also another ‘JAM Classico’.
Austin Basconcillo scored the match’s lone goal with a header, coming off a corner kick, in the 46th minute. Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) won third place via a 4-5 penalty shootout win over XS.
On the other hand, ADDU edged out SHS-AdC, 3-2, in the girls’ futsal finals.
SHS-AdC, however, didn’t come out empty-handed after taking home titles in both the boys’ and girls’ division volleyball.
SHS-AdC beat ADDU in a five-set thriller, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21, 26-28, 16-14, in the boys’ division finals.
SHS-AdC also squeaked past ADDU in five sets, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13, in the girls’ division championship match.
JAM is an annual meet of Jesuits schools in the Philippines.
A total of 10 Jesuits schools competed in basketball, football, futsal, volleyball, athletics, table tennis, chess, lawn tennis, swimming and badminton from Oct. 25 to 30. (EKA)
