Furever

TO get another Kiki or not, that is the question.

For dog owners, you must be familiar with this dilemma: to get another dog or not?

My Kiki, a Belgian Malinois–Aspin mix, will turn two this year. She’s a force to reckon with—a tiny little doggo with a big personality (thanks to her mixed genes).

To date, we’ve said goodbye to a lot of our furniture and shoes. She has chewed on couch and shoes, torn curtains, and totaled shoe stands. We’ve trained her (somewhat), but she still has so much energy.

She’s adopted, and I’ve been debating these past days if I should get another Kiki sibling. Kiki’s original owner has a few puppies up for adoption again, and it might do well to get Kiki a playmate to curb the loneliness and anxiety while I’m at work.

I worry, though, that I might not be ready enough for another high-energy dog like a Belgian Malinois—one typhoon Kiki might be enough. (I can’t stand the idea of worrying over my shoe collection again and getting several pairs ruined by another puppy-in-training.)

So maybe adopting another Kiki may not be on my priority list right now, but if you’re considering getting a dog, go adopt one today.

You know how the old saying goes: adopt, don’t shop. Head on over to the nearest animal pound or rescue center and check your options. You might just find your perfect dog match at the pound. There are so many cats and dogs looking for their furever homes.

By adopting, you avoid the chances of potentially buying from a puppy mill, and potentially also stopping this atrocious business cycle. If you’re not familiar with this business, know that some dog sellers keep breeding dogs in the most inhumane conditions—caged, in small spaces, with poor nutritional support, and mother dogs are always pregnant with little time to rest after pregnancies. If you seriously do want to shop, do your research: Are these puppies bred by a responsible breeder?

I do encourage you to adopt. There’s no better feeling than giving a home to a dog or cat, and you can instantly see the happiness on their faces! My Kiki, then a few months old, instantly made herself at home, rolled on her back and fell asleep when we first got her.

There are many organizations that take care of abandoned and rescued animals. The Cebu City Pound does an excellent job of taking care of some of these animals and making sure they get the attention and homes they need.

Sometimes I find dog and cat adoption activities at Robinsons Galleria by a local rescue group. Go find groups where you can adopt a dog or cat from.

Adopt and find a perfect life partner who’ll love you unconditionally furever. Yes, there is indeed a furever.
