Custodio: A lesson on self-love

I WRITE this not as a teacher but as a student myself. I am not an expert on stuff like this but I try hard to learn lessons that life throws at me. Sometimes the lessons are quite easy, no brains needed if I may say so. Yet there are rather difficult ones that drain you of your energy just by trying not to drown in its complexities and challenges.

In my life, sometimes I wonder about recurring lessons. I kinda believe that past lessons do not repeat themselves if you got it the first time so these comebacking lessons really bother me. I unabashedly believe that I am an excellent learner so I am repeatedly dumbfounded if problems with strikingly similar characteristics keep popping up to wreak havoc in my life?

Why do these problems keep happening again and again? What did I do wrong?

My friend Bam says I probably haven’t learned the lesson yet, whatever it is. Part of me found that revolting but I thought to myself that there might be truth on it too. You never really know unless you find the time to sift through the gamut of experiences related to it. Hopefully some significant thing will pop out.

Or maybe you’ll have an epiphany. Like I did.

It just got me thinking that maybe, it might seem to be the same obstacle but it really isn't. We have the habit of assuming certain things, especially at face value, after which no further thought is given to succeeding information. We stop giving it a thought. We suppose that things are the same so we treat it the same way, thereby giving less attention to the details. More often, it is in the small details where huge differences can be found. We miss it because we did not pay attention.

I had a similar experience the past week. Really, when these things happen, the last person you’ll even care about is yourself. When challenges arise and we are having a hard time, chances are, we'll be more concerned about the people around us than ourselves. It’s always them before us.

Well, we should always be first. I know it sounds selfish but we really should have the highest regard for our welfare and feelings before anyone else’s. We need to be selfish because above anyone, we should love ourselves first.

Take heed! We need to listen to that nagging inner voice that has been screaming “ako muna!!(me first)” that we always choose to ignore. The problems do not always go away at once but you will start to feel good because you chose to hear yourself out. Self -love begins with acknowledging yourself and the difficulties that you are going through. It starts with sifting through the murky puddles and realizing your own strength. Sometimes we do forget how we have beautifully survived our trials; we just need to be reminded.

Happy Sunday Everyone! :)
