Macagba: Kagay-anon family forward

IN MY Social Studies classes, I always remind my students that the family is not just a basic but a crucial factor and unit of society. For Filipinos in particular, the family is a strong force that enables and nurtures individuals to be productive members of the society. However, with the multitude of factors that affect our communities, families becomes so vulnerable and susceptible to many aspects that threaten its foundations thereby ultimately affecting the kids.

Most parents that I have known would always say that what they do are those that they have learned from their own experience and from their own families. But because of the growingly complex society, things have been moving forward at an exponential rate, which forces parents to learn as fast as they could so that they would be able to cope and adapt to the changing world.

But I believe that learning from our own experience to be better family persons is quite an obsolete mindset considering that the context of families now is very different from the context of our families before. We need to double our efforts to make sure that we are able to respond to the needs of the changing times. What better way to react but to continue learning and strengthening the competencies that we have towards building a strong and value-laden families.

In other countries, their government would make sure that there is a mandatory training for parents. However, in our country, this seems to be not that popular considering that most of us are doing things that we learned from our experience with our respective families. While we Filipinos value the family, there seems to be very little effort shown to build and nurture it. Thus, with the rapid development and the various changes that we have experienced, parents and those who plan to build their own families need to put their acts together and resort from learning on-line or even personal initiatives for ongoing education.

Luckily, in our city, there is a budding group called, Creo Early Learning Partners, Inc. that is committed in helping Kagay-anons to equip and empower families to bring forth the best development for the kids. They will hold their first ever family forward program on November 11, 2018, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Seda Hotel with their launching program called Parenting and Partnership: Family Today. This activity will feature experts in the field of family, which I think is very crucial in this day and age.

The impressing factor of this organization’s initiatives is the high regard that they put in the family as an instrument in developing potentially productive citizens. Likewise, they aim to build a community that believes in the values of families. While these types of initiatives is something new in our city, the more individuals who genuinely promote the strengthening of families, the more that we could build a stronger city and even a resilient country.
