Sula: Coming of age

UNLESS a curve ball wrecks the plan, Vice Governor Dennis "Delta" Pineda is more likely than not to become the next governor of Pampanga in 2019 -- with all due respect to the other candidates for the post.

Notwithstanding the right to choose, Pampanga voters might as well concede the fait accompli.

If fate can be planned, this is it, folks. The third -- and youngest -- member of the political trinity in the province is on his way to fulfill what has long been predicted, at least in the last years, by political pundits, pro or con.

Times like this tempt the futurists to think in the past tense.

Politically, indeed, the son has come of age.

One obvious distinction is Delta's brand of politics. It's intuitively Chinese.

a) Deng Shiao Ping - It doesn't matter what color of the cat is as long as it catches mice.

b) Sun Tzu- It is better to win without fighting.

c) Mao Tse Tung - Don't cut the melon from the vine; let it fall off naturally.

Big catches include no less than Congressman Rimpy and Congressman Dong of the fourth and third district. Delta owns the second. The first is, let's say up for grabs. Although, that's really an illusion. Do a little math and you know where are the odds.

As a result, there seems to be less, if at all, unfriendly territory, probably except one. And if you draw a political map of the province. A Venn-kind of a diagram will emerge like a roscharch ink blot.

In other words, it's more inclusive than not, as opposed to the previous years when the older Pineda was reigning.

So far, the little preview is good and promising, and thus far provides some insights.

Delta is reasonable and a man of his word, says a congressman who used to be an outlier but now relishes being an insider with the subdued excitement of a new member of a glee club. Other voices, not from politicians, croon the guy is teachable and willing to learn. Some say he's decisive. No one has established his relation to Santa Claus -- yet. But given the pedigree, it's probably a matter of time before the genes kick in or the paeans.

So, after all has been said and done, this paper's Ian Flora's description that the coming polls in May next will be uneventful, including that of the race for vice governor, is more bull's eye than bull. Translation: potentially more peaceful, less expensive but, well, boring.

The atmospherics will be that of a low-calorie, low-octane game, not unlike in a basketball championship finals when one team is leading 2-0 in a best of five match and the spectators are on the way to the exit in the third quarter of the third game.

Don't hold your breath.
